Ancient pilgrimage trail through moss forest. Family-run lodges. Stone paths worn smooth over centuries.

Kagoshima

UNESCO rainforest, mud, ancient cedars. Boardwalks through primeval forest. Rains 300 days a year.

Daisetsuzan

Volcanic, open tundra, bears, no crowds. Hokkaido's roof. The wild frontier of Japanese hiking.

July – SeptemberView Trails

Yamanashi / Shizuoka

Iconic peak, technical off-season, accessible from Tokyo. Crampons required, crowds avoided.
