Why hike Japan?

Solitude

Compared to the Alps or the Rockies, Japanese trails are empty. You might pass 20 people on a full day of hiking. The huts fill up in peak season, but the trails themselves belong to you.

Hut Culture

There is nothing else like it. Sleeping at 2,500m without carrying a tent. Ramen for dinner with a view. Communal bunks, wood stoves, no showers. Functional, memorable, unique to Japan.

Accessibility

Trains to trailheads. Clear signage. Well-maintained paths. Rescue infrastructure. You can be on a 3,000m ridge by noon after sleeping in Tokyo. The logistics just work.

From the Trail

Kumano Kodo|June 2026

Rain on the Kodo

It rained for 9 of the 10 hours we walked on day two. The stone steps became a water slide. Leeches got through two of our socks. And yet the moss-covered forest in that kind of rain takes on a color that does not exist in dry conditions. The shrines look older when wet.

The family lodge that night had a wood-fired bath. We sat in it for an hour without speaking. That is why it is worth it.

Hotaka Ladder

10 meters of vertical steel bolted to granite. Two hands required. A lanyard clip for your pack. Below you: 800 meters of air. I have guided this section 80 times and I still feel it.

The trick is to not look down until you are clipping into the anchor at the top. Then look down. That view is why you came.
