Day 1

12 km+1,400 m8–9 hrs

Asahidake ropeway to Sugatami Hut. Above treeline quickly. Cross steaming fumaroles. First encounter with open volcanic terrain.

Day 2

10 km+900 m / −700 m7–8 hrs

Sugatami to Kuro-dake. Ridge traverse with loose volcanic rock. Navigation required in fog. Bear bells constant.

Day 3

14 km+1,100 m / −800 m9–10 hrs

Longest day. Kuro-dake to Hakuun-dake. Cross multiple peaks. Weather changes fast. Previous rope sections if wet.

Hakuun-dake to Tenninkyo. Descend into valley. Hot springs at the end. Wildlife sightings most likely today.

Physical Prep

Level 4 means 8+ hours hiking, exposure to weather, route finding. Previous multi-day hiking required. You carry your own gear including food for some days. This is the real thing.

Kenji Mori or rotating Hokkaido specialist. Bear protocol drilled at the trailhead. The guide carries the satellite communicator and decides if weather turns.
